The Catholic Church has launched an investigation after 2 missionary nuns became pregnant as they worked in Africa.
The 2 women belong to separate religious orders in Sicily.
Despite their vows of chastity, the 2 nuns are expecting children.
One of the nuns is a mother superior, and she was found several weeks pregnant, and the other one discovered that she was pregnant when she complained of stomach pain.
Both nuns are now facing an uncertain future in their profession.
The latest nun pregnant scandal has caused consternation among the clergy.
According to ANSA, a news agency in Italy, one of the nuns, who is 34-years-old, found out she was pregnant when she had severe stomach pain
Reports suggest that the 34-year-old nun belongs to a convent in Nebrodi Mountains, Sicily.
The nun has moved to Palermo so she could prepare for the birth of her child.
It is believed that the nun will choose to give up her monastic life and focus on raising the child that she’s carrying.
The second case involves a nun that is from Madagascar, she was discovered to be several weeks pregnant.
The nun was a mother superior, which is equivalent to a senior monastic, and was caring for the elderly at an institute in Ragusa.
The mother superior has already returned to her home country.
According to a church source in Rome, both women had a sexual encounter with someone when they were back in their home nations.
The source said, “It appears that both women were back in their home nations and obviously had some form of a sexual encounter. An investigation has been launched. They both breached strict rules of chastity but the welfare of their children is uppermost.”
Earlier this year, Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, admitted that many nuns were being abused sexually.
He called the problem a “serious, grave problem.”
When Pope Francis was on his papal plane earlier this year, the Pope said the church had to fight this and protect their religious sisters.
