UIC, Chicago: Ruth George, a 19-year-old student, was walking alone to her car in a parking garage at the University of Illinois in Chicago when a man started to follow her and catcall her.
Just like what everyone else would do, the 19-year-old student ignored the man. And this is where things got deadly.
Donald Thurman, the man that was catcalling Ruth, got angry for being ignored and decided to put her in a chokehold.
Donald then threw the woman in the backseat of her own car and raped her while she was unconscious.
The family of Ruth got worried when she did not return home, and ended up reporting their concerns to the UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) Police.
The UIC Police traced the number of Ruth to a parking garage, where the police and the sisters of Ruth found her dead body.
A medical examiner who performed an autopsy on Ruth’s body said she died from strangulation.
Thurman was arrested by the police on Sunday and was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault.
26-year-old Donald Thurman was released last year after serving 2 years of a 6-year prison sentence for an armed robbery.
Thurman is now being held without bail.
Investigations found out that Ruth was walking to the parking garage in UIC at nearly 1:25 am on Saturday when Thurman approached her and tried to talk to her.
While ignoring the catcalls of Thurman, Ruth continued to walk to her car, and this is where she was placed in chokehold.
When she got unconscious, Thurman dragged her from the ground and threw her in the backseat of her car and ended up raping her.
The sisters of Ruth and the UIC police found the dead body inside the car, it was cold and unresponsive.
The sisters of Ruth tried to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities also recovered a condom and semen in the car.
CCTV footage showed Thurman following Ruth into the parking garage and running away from the scene nearly 35 minutes later.
Thurman was arrested on Sunday after he was spotted in the area.
Thurman reportedly admitted that he choked Ruth, threw her inside the car, and sexually assaulted her when she was unconscious, but denied that he raped her.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim.
