New Delhi: Alleging that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi lied to the whole nation after the RBI said that a total of 99.3 percent of the demonetized Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes have returned to the banking system, the Congress party sought for an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The opposition party hit out at the Centre by saying that the Nation had to pay a big price after the demonetizing move for the highly used currency and that too was announced by PM Modi on November 8, 2016.
Due to the demonetization move, former finance minister P Chidambaram said that more than 100 lives were lost and jobs of lakhs of youth came to standstill ultimately getting destroyed after the closure of businesses after the demonetization move.
He further said that the Indian economy lost 1.5 percent of GDP growth that made up for a loss of Rs. 2.25 lakh crore a year
The Indian economy lost 1.5 per cent of GDP growth that accounted for a loss of Rs. 2.25 lakh crore a year, he said.
The prime minister Narendra Modi claimed in his 2017 Independence Day speech that more than Rs. 3 lakh crore unaccounted money will come back to the system, said Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
“Modiji, will you apologise for that lie now?” Mr Surjewala asked.
“(The) RBI report again proves that demonetization was ‘Modi-made disaster’ of epic proportions. 99.30 pc of demonetised money returns,” he added.
The Reserve Bank of India today announced that a total of 99.3 percent of the demonetized notes has returned to the banking system.
Notes worth of Rs. 15.31 lakhs have been returned out of the total 15.41 lakh crore worth of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 that were in circulation on November 8, 2016 at the time of note ban announcement.
As per the announcement by RBI, Rs. 10,720 crores of the demonetized currency did not return to the system.
Mr. Chidambaram said in a series of tweet that every rupee of the Rs. 15.42 lakh crore except a small sum of Rs. 13,000 crores has come back to the RBI.
“Remember who had said that Rs. 3 lakh crore will not come back and that will be a gain for the government?” he said, taking a dig at PM Modi.
“I suspect that the bulk of the Rs. 13,000 crore is in Nepal and Bhutan and some that was lost or destroyed,” he said.
“So, government and RBI actually demonetized only Rs. 13,000 crore and the country paid a huge price. Over 100 lives were lost. 15 crore daily wage earners lost their livelihood for several weeks. Thousands of SME units were shut down. Lakhs of jobs were destroyed. Indian economy lost 1.5 per cent of GDP in terms of growth. That alone was a loss of Rs. 2.25 lakh crore a year,” he said in tweets.
