15 Interesting Conspiracy Theories About Indian History That Will Leave You Scratching Your Head In Amazement

Over the course of Indian history, especially during the last century or so, there are many unexplained events and those incidents have chosen India as the stage. Man is curious by nature, and the uncertain nature of events pushes us to find alternate explanations to rationalize things beyond our understanding. There will be many imaginations when an incident comes to the picture. That is how conspiracy theories are conceived. There’s no concrete proof to verify these theories, but they’re fascinating nonetheless.

1. India still a British colony?

Even though India became independent in 1947, it was part of the commonwealth of nations, suggesting that the Queen of England still exerted influence over it. The Queen also allegedly can travel without visa to any Commonwealth nation. This conspiracy theory gained strength when Queen Elizabeth II visited India in 1997 without a visa.

2. Taj Mahal or Shiva temple?

We have been taught in our history books that Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in the memory of his beloved Mumtaz. Well, some folks have a different theory. Allegedly, carbon dating of Taj samples taken by a certain Prof. Marvin Miller suggests that the Taj Mahal was built 300 years before Shahjahan and could have originally been a temple for Lord Shiva.

3. The deaths of martyrs Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajaguru

Could Gandhi have saved them?

Scheduled to be hanged to death on 24th March for the Lahore Conspiracy case involving the killing of Officer John Saunders, they were instead hanged a day earlier on 23rd March 1931. There have been many conspiracy theories to explain this. One theory says that Mahatma Gandhi had the choice of saving these brave men, but did not do enough before signing the Gandhi-Irwin pact. But to that, Gandhi supporters say that he did not have enough influence on the British to stop the hanging.

Was Gandhi a co-conspirator in their deaths?

There is another theory according to which, Gandhi conspired with the British to execute Bhagat Singh, as he was a threat to the Mahatma’s ideologies. Then again, many say that his leadership was never under threat and he would not have gained anything from it in any way.

Were they never hanged, but shot by the Saunders family, for revenge, instead?

A third theory also exists. A book titled Some Hidden Facts: Martyrdom of Shaheed Bhagat Singh- Secrets unfurled by an Intelligence Bureau Agent of British-India by K.S. Kooner and G.S. Sindhra, states that the 3 prisoners were hung in a manner that they were in semi conscious state and taken outside the prison to be shot by members of the Saunder’s family for revenge.

Why were the bodies cremated in secret?

Further doubt arises as to how they died since their bodies were not sent to their families, instead the jail authority broke the rear wall, cremated the bodies secretly in the dark and threw the ashes into the Sutlej River.

4. Does a secret society started by Emperor Ashoka that still exists today?

Move over Dan Brown, cos we have our very own Priory of Sion! So the story goes that Emperor Asoka had developed a secret society around 270 B.C. This society had nine men, who guarded nine books that needed to be preserved for the safety of human society. These books were based on warfare, sociology, communication, alchemy, death, microbiology, light, gravity and cosmology.

5. Subhash Chandra Bose didn’t die in a plane crash?

Subhash Chandra Bose’s death has several conspiracy theories around it. One suggests that he actually didn’t die in the air crash and lived as a holy man under the name of Gumnami Baba until he died in 1985. Another theory claims that he lived in Russia as a war criminal and died there.

6. Was Lal Bahadur Shastri poisoned?

While we all know that Lal Bahadur Shastri died in Russia due to a heart attack, some theorists actually believe that he was poisoned. They point out that no post-mortem was carried out. Also the flask that he drank water from never came back to India. Recently someone filed an RTI asking for his death certificate, but the government of India turned down the request.

Why weren’t the RTIs answered?

RTIs were filed pertaining to documents related to the cause of death but the PMO said there was only one classified document which was exempted from disclosure as it could cause international disharmony and spoil foreign relations. The Home Ministry referred the matter to the National Archives and the Delhi Police for retrieving any documents or information based on the incident. His son Sunil claimed it was absurd how the death of a sitting Prime Minister was looked into by district level police instead of higher authorities.

7. Gandhiji could have stopped Bhagat Singh’s execution?

Many conspiracy theorists believe that the Mahatma could’ve used his influence to stop Bhagat Singh’s execution. But he chose not to intervene because Singh’s violent methods were a direct challenge to his ideology.

8. The Death of Sanjay Gandhi Was by members of his Own Party..?

Some believe that Sanjay had learnt of his biological father, who was another Muslim man and not Feroze. This led to him blackmailing his mother Indira Gandhi and also controlling the political scenario during the emergency. However, his death raised more questions. He died of a plane crash that had no explosion apparently. The reason was cited to be head injury. But due to his ideologies not being in sync with the part or his mother’s, conspiracy theorists believed that his death was not an accident but part of a plot by members of his own party.

9. Sanjay Gandhi’s “Assassination”–Did His Own Mother Orchestrate It?

Indira Gandhi was a shrewd, cunning and dominant politician, who was known to fight back and win against all odds. She tormented politicians all over and was often called the Margaret Thatcher of India. But the simple question is, would a mother kill her own son? Well, that’s what this theory suggests. It says that Sanjay Gandhi, a brilliant pilot, was killed in a plane crash that was staged and orchestrated by his own mother. The reasoning behind this theory is interesting too. It says that Sanjay Gandhi, apparently, got too big for his shoes, and started blackmailing his own mother. She wasn’t one to take that from anyone and the rest, as they say, is history.

10. The Nehru-Gandhi Dynasty

Jawaharlal Nehru’s affairs

It is said that Panditji had several affairs, few of them being with Edwina Mountbatten (wife of Lord Mountbatten), Padmaja Naidu (Sarojini Naidu’s daughter) and Shraddha Mata. Shraddha Mata had delivered a still born child in a catholic hospital in Bangalore and was looked after by Dr Ezekiel. After her departure to Delhi, Dr Ezekiel recovered letters that she had forgotten to carry with her, which were revealed to have been written by PM Nehru.

Indira converted to Islam after marrying Feroze.

It is believed that Indira Nehru, had changed her name to Maimuna Begum after being wed to Feroze Gandhi. But Jawaharlal Nehru opposed this, seeing that their stature in Indian politics was of prime concern, so he asked them to adopt the surname Gandhi. Feroze was believed to be Parsi and his surname was Gandhy. But since ‘Gandhi’ as a surname was more influential, the couple adopted that and even performed a mock vedic marriage in India.

11. Did the Vimanas (Vedic aircrafts) of Ancient India really exist?

The Vedic literature is supposed to be one of the oldest forms of literature known to everyone; encompassing the wisdom of the simple man who lived thousands of years ago and offers philosophical and practical solutions to life. It is little known, however, that these Vedas also contain something about the Vimanas, i.e. flying aircrafts.

Apparently, the Vimanas are of two types :

  1. A manmade craft that resembles the modern airplane and flew with the aid of birdlike wings. The machines, and its mentions, bear a lot of resemblance to the modern day aircraft.
  2. Unstreamlined structures that fly in a mysterious manner and are not made by man. Its structure and functioning generally treads towards what we know today as the UFOs. Although this theory seems far-fetched, the fact that there are a number of carvings, both in India and abroad that show a picture of the flying aircraft certainly made a few people sit up and take notice. This one came under some serious media-fire during the now infamous 102nd Indian Science Congress.

Still, even if you don’t believe in the possibility of these having existed, you should read more about some of India’s real scientific contributions to the world given below.

Did Shivkar Babuji Talpade Invented The Plane 8 Years Before The Wright Brothers?

Shivkar Talpade was a scientist who is rumoured to have built the first ever aircraft known to man. Born in what we know today as Bombay, Talpade received backing and funding from the Maharaja of Baroda and built an unmanned aircraft. Apparently, it flew at a height of 1500 feet before it came crashing down. Although there are no records, and this was never proven, the machine ‘allegedly’ used four mercury powered containers that acted as engines, propelling the craft with a powerful thunderbolt to heights. However, the aircraft was never controlled, and after repeated warnings from the British government, the Maharaja stopped his funding, and the aircraft model remained a dream. P.s. – This was in 1895, eight years before the Wright brothers even came up with their aircraft model.

12. Does India Really Have Its Own UFO Base?

India’s very own Area 51 is Kongka La Pass on the border of China. Locals on both sides of the border believe there is an underground UFO base in this region with the knowledge of both countries. They also claim that they have seen UFOs coming out of the ground. Tourists are denied entry to this area in spite of permits to travel between the two countries. This theory is given credence by the fact that in June 2006, satellite imagery on Google Earth revealed a 1:500 scale detailed terrain model of the area in question on the Chinese side of the border. This model was surrounded by buildings resembling a military facility, suggesting that was indeed something fishy about the area. More curiously still, in recent years, there have been numerous reports from Ladakh saying that they have indeed been sighting UFOs on a regular basis, though these “UFOs” are downplayed and said to be nothing else but Chinese Fire Lanterns.

13. Homi Bhabha’s Death–Was The CIA Behind It?

Famously regarded as the father of Indian Nuclear Programme, Dr. Homi Bhabha was India’s foremost Nuclear physicist who was killed in an air plane crash in 1966 near Mount Blanc, France. The conspiracy theory here suggests that the CIA was involved with the crash possibly to cripple India’s nuclear programme, which suffered a massive blow and came to a temporary halt following his death. If this interests you though, you might be further intrigued to know that even today, India’s nuclear scientists continue to die in the strangest of ways and very few people in India seem to be aware of it.

14. 2004 Tsunami Triggered by a Dormant World War II Nuclear Bomb?

Conspiracy theorists claim that the 2004 Tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean was triggered by an underwater nuclear explosion of a bomb that had remained dormant since world war II. Imagine what would be the next..

Adam’s Bridge built by Hanuman?

Adam’s Bridge connects India and Sri Lanka, and is a string of sandstones and shells. Some records suggest that this could be the same bridge that Hanuman built for Lord Rama in the epic Ramayana. Though most people believe this to be a myth. What do you think of it..?
