Court To Give Judgement Today In 2007 Hyderabad Twin Bomb Blasts Case

Hyderabad: A court in Hyderabad will issue its judgment over the case of twin bomb blasts at Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park in Hyderabad today. The judgment will be given after a total of eleven years of twin bomb blasts which claimed 42 lives and injured more than 50 people.

In June last year, the trial against the four accused in the bomb blast case was shifted from the Nampally court complex to a court located in the premises of Cherlapalli Central Prison in the same city.

The sessions Judge Srinivas Rao had on August 7 posted the case for judgment on August 27 after completion of arguments and counter-arguments.

On Saturday, the 11th anniversary of the twin blasts was observed by the family members and relatives of the victims which took place on August 25, 2007.

Telangana Police’s Counter Intelligence (CI) had been involved in the investigation of the case and as a result, it filed three charges against the accused, some of whom are still on the run.

The second Metropolitan Sessions Judge court had in August 2013 framed charges against the four accused, namely Aneeq Shafiq Syed, Mohammed Sadiq, Ansar Ahmed Badshah Sheikh and Akbar Ismail Choudhary – all of them are alleged to be operatives of Indian Mujahideen – a claim, not proven until now.

The accused were charged under various sections of the IPC including the section 302 (murder) and many other relevant provisions from the IPC and some other sections from the Explosive Substances Act in relation to the twin blasts. They were charged regarding recovery of an unexploded bomb that was found under a foot overbridge located at Dilsuknagar area in Hyderabad.

The alleged are said to be among those people who were arrested by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad back in October 2008 and they were later taken into custody by the Gujarat police.

All of the four accused are presently lodged in the Cherlapalli Central Prison located in Hyderabad.

During the trial, almost 170 witnesses were examined and cross-examined.

The bomb blast occurred at a famous local and popular eatery, Gokul Chat that killed 32 people, while 10 other people faced death due to the bomb blast at an open theatre at Lumbini Park, which is located few meters away from the state Secretariat.

Over 50 people were reported to be injured due to the near-simultaneous blasts that occurred at the eatery and theatre.
