The municipal administration department has started overhauling Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to improve the conditions of the roads in the state.
With damage of roads due to the recent rains, the municipal administration department on Wednesday shelved the Major Roads Division (MRD) of the GHMC and decentralised the powers to local deputy executive engineers for taking up repair of roads immediately.
The MRD was constituted when the roads of the roads and buildings department in the city were taken over by the GHMC. However, the road works have to be cleared by the chief engineer in MRD, which was creating troubles and delaying the repair process.
MAUD minister KTR signed the file cancelling the MRD. “Now the decisions on road repairs will be taken circle-wise in GHMC. The deputy executive engineers will consult SEs and finalise the works,” he said.
In an informal chat with reporters, Rama Rao said that the circles in GHMC would be increased from 24 to 30 soon.
JP group to repair roads:
Meanwhile, the JP Group was engaged to repair two stretches of roads in the city on an experimental basis. A 300 mt road near Taj Krishna hotel and another 300 mt stretch from Nagarjuna circle to flyover would be given to JP Group.
“They assured us to repair these roads in a week. We will examine this and proceed further on other roads,” KTR said.
“Currently, the sewerage system can withstand only 2 cm rain. We will improve the sewerage system so that the stagnation of rainwater can be minimised,” he added.
