For a moment, let us just put aside the appreciable progress in technology and communication systems, if we switch our subject to the Women Safety and their freedom, the discussion might end up bit stuttered. Yes, the issue of woman’s safety in our country and the personal struggle of every woman is still beyond solutions.
Harassing, rapes, molesting and beating women have become a cruel habit for some rogues. The rate of sexual assaults, rapes in India has become very high since few years and still increasing.
Though the government has implemented many sections to punish the rapists, the rate of sexual assaults is not reducing. And we are seeing some bizarre and shameful incidents daily which we cannot even digest the things out of it.
And now again a shameful incident came into the spotlight which is strongly questioning the women safety in the country.
As we all know the duty of government railway police is to ensure the safety of railway passengers but who will save the common public when the criminal is a constable of Railway police? Yes, you read that right!
A constable of government railway police allegedly raped a 27-year lady in a moving train on Tuesday. The name of the train is Chandigarh-Lucknow Express and the rape has taken place in the coach that is reserved for the disabled travelers. The train was going from Chandpur to Bijnor when the incident took place. The local police has taken the accused into custody and he has also been suspended from his job.
As per the officials, on Monday night, the victim boarded the train but she boarded it by mistake from Lucknow as she was supposed to take the train for Meerut. The TTE moved her to the disabled coach, as she was traveling in the sleeper coach without a ticket. The coach was almost empty and the constable was already present there. As per the victim, she was raped in the coach by the constable.
At 9:30 am, the train reached Bijnor and passengers who wanted to travel in the disabled coach found that the coach was locked. After a lot of commotion, the door was opened and the lady was found lying unconscious. The passengers didn’t let the train depart for 20 minutes, as they demanded an action against the accused.
Soon, SP Atul Sharma, GRP SP KK Chaudhary and DM Jagat Raj Tripathi arrived at the railway station along with other senior officials and ordered that the woman should be admitted to the district hospital. The security has been increased outside the hospital as the woman is from a minority community and a huge crowd is gathered outside the hospital.
The woman stated in her complaint that she visited Lucknow for the treatment of her illness. She boarded this train by mistake and fell asleep almost immediately. She also claimed that the constable forced the passengers who were in the disabled coach to leave the coach. Not only this, he also allegedly threatened to kill her by strangling her before rape.
The GRP circle officer (Saharanpur), HP Kasana, stated,
“The woman is originally from Rampur but is currently residing in Meerut. We have registered a case against Shukla under Sections 376 (rape) and 506-A (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. The accused, who is a resident of Pratapgarh district, has been arrested. A medical test of both of them has been conducted and we are waiting for the report.”
We need not only some stronger laws but also the speedy execution of cases so that the culprits get punished, which may make people afraid of committing crimes.
