After the horrific shootings at a gay nightclub which left 49 dead and scores more injured in Florida, on Sunday, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his sympathy — “Shocked at the shootout in Orlando, USA. My thoughts & prayers are with the bereaved families and the injured.”
The sympathetic tweets promoted a quick backlash from those who want India’s Parliament to repeal a Colonial-era law that criminalizes homosexual acts as India is one of many countries around the world where gay sex is against the law.

If you do have any sympathy, show it by protecting LGBTQ rights in your own country. #Scrap377 https://t.co/OHPyiaJs9s

We must shame PM @narendramodi for letting hateful people in his party to exist. The same hate has killed LGBT people in Orlando. #scrap377

If you run one of 77 countries where being gay is a crime, don’t offer sympathy; fix your law, bc you are complicit. pic.twitter.com/UbwNj9DcNH
