ISRO’s Path-Breaking Gel To Be Used On Earth Now For Indian Soldiers

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) scientists have developed a special blue gel which will help primarily in insulation and heat exchange from the outside temperature which is very high.

Dr. K Sivan, director of VSSC said, “we needed a material to insulate our primary-stage rocket engines that are being sent into space, as the temperature on the outside is very high and if the insulation is missing, the engine would burn”.

“We have been having discussions on how we will be able to take this to the next level. We intend to create a jacket using this gel,” he said.

“Using this material, the jackets’ weight can be brought down to around 200 to 300 grams and shoes to around 800 grams,” said Dr. Sivan. Till these days white jackets and white shoes are being used by the Indian Army which is about three kilograms.

The insulation materials are being purchased from other countries by the Indian space missions. They often pay while foreign exchange at times exorbitant amount because of opportunity costs. The gel which is developed can act as a coolant and provide thermal resistance. All these developments are done as an initiative to ‘Make in India’.

Due to climatic conditions, the about 869 Indian soldiers like Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad are died in Siachen from 1984 till November last year. This moment is highly guarded as the world`s lightest synthetic material is opened for public usage can cut down the power bills.
