Bajrang Dal and Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag Mislead Us into Religious Conversion: Muslim Families in Agra

In the past there were instances wherein human acts and violation of human rights have been practiced by few religious groups and firms such as self-styled god mens, ashrams and madrasas of various religious communities for their self-benefits in the name and disguise of religion. 57 Muslim families in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra district, who the RSS on Monday claimed to have “converted” to Hinduism, have said that they were misled by Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag and Bajrang Dal activists into believing that the event was for BPL cards and not for religious conversion.

Later it was known by the converted Muslim families that the religion conversion act was solely practiced by the Hindu communal group Bajrang Dal so for religious benefits while it wasn’t for their social status upliftment. Converted Muslim families stated that they had told “pujaris” at the conversion programme Monday that they were “changing their religion” of their own volition, they said they did so out of fear of violence and were misled.” Bajrang Dal representatives stated that the conversion programme had happened “out in the open”, and the families had changed tack under duress.

Chief of converted 57 families comprising more than 200 people, Ismail Khan, said he had first been approached by a man 15 days ago. “All of us live here in kuccha houses, and pick rags for a living. We came and settled here 12 years ago, and hail from Bihar and Bengal. Fifteen days ago, a man from the locality came to me and asked if we had ration cards, to which I replied in the affirmative. He then asked me if all of us had BPL cards, but when I said no, he told me he would arrange them for us,” he said.

He added stating that the man he identified as Kishan Lal assured them that the families are going to be benefitted with the government schemes if they had been issued BPL cards and would be eligible to for a host of sops, including subsidized schooling and medical arrangements. Kishan Lal ascertained the Muslim families that the day their names were registered, big people would pay a visit to their basti, and even the media which in fact sounded impressive to the misled familes and agreed immediately and it was decided that the religious conversion exercise would be carried out on Monday. A resident of the slum cluster Murshida Begum said on Monday afternoon, men arrived in “big cars with tilaks on their foreheads accompanied by the media.” They put some idols in one corner, and spread a sheet.

“We began to get worried, but could say nothing for fear of the powerful people. They asked our men to wear their skull caps, read some text, and throw some things into a fire. They asked them if they were happy being Hindus now. Everyone was inside the basti, and there could have been trouble. We are poor people with nowhere to go, and if our landlord tells us to leave, we will have nowhere to go. What could the men have said but yes?” she said.

Bajrang Dal activist Ajju Chauhan said, “It was not a conversion but a ghar vapsi, because the previous generations of these families had been converted from Hinduism to Islam. It was done with their consent, and not secretively, but for everyone to see. There was no issues raised on Monday, and we had only assured the families of some assistance from our organizations. They are only saying this out of pressure from vested interests.” The Bajrang Dal and the Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag, an RSS offshoot, on Monday claimed to have converted the families into Hinduism at a ‘Purkhon ki ghar vapsi’ (Coming home of the ancestors) ceremony, where the right-wing groups said they were able to bring more than 200 Muslims “back to Hinduism”.

There wasn’t any complaint filed yet by anyone regarding this issue thus Senior police officers said that they had not received a complaint so far and if they did a matter would be investigated. Ismail Khan however said that the families did not want to approach the police, but hoped things would “return to the way they were”.

RSS and Bajrang Dal Religious Conversion Causes Uproar in Parliament

There was uproar in the parliament by the opposition political parties such as Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress on Wednesday and sought to corner the government over the reported conversion of Muslims to Hinduism in Agra, saying changing religion by force and by allurement was illegal. Chief of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati, raised the issue and said that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliate Bajrang Dal converted some Muslim families to Hinduism in Agra by force and by allurement. “This is a serious matter as allurement was given to poor to get them converted,” she said, adding that a similar exercise is being planned in Aligarh by the month-end where more Muslims and Christians will be converted to Hinduism. Forced conversions should be stopped, she demanded as members from Congress, Left, TMC and SP joined her, shouting ‘Pradhan Mantri Jawab Do (Prime Minister reply)’. CPM’s Sitaram Yechury said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should come to the House and clarify on the issue. “India is a secular democratic republic and it will remain so. If attempts are made to change it, you will not remain but India will remain,” he said.
