Chennai: DMK is all set to appoint MK Stalin as its new President. By tomorrow, he will become the boss of the party. Mr. Stalin is the son of M Karunanidhi and was chosen as political heir by him as party chief and overall, Mr. Stalin was responsible for managing the party for more than a year after his father avoided public life due to ill health with an age of 94. As per the loyalists inside DMK, the son controls the party fully.
After Mr. Karunanidhi’s death this month, the position of party’s Presidentship was vacant. On Sunday, Mr. Stalin filed his nomination formalities at Anna Arivalayam which is the headquarters of the party in Chennai. He is going to see no opposition over his elevation as party president due to the fact that he was the only one who filed nomination for the post. The post of treasurer which was previously held by Mr. Stalin saw the filing of nomination by Senior leader and party principal secretary Duraimurugan.
As his father led the party for about 49 years, MK Stalin will become the second president of the DMK.
MK Stalin was groomed by his father and he then held the posts of former deputy chief minister, local administration minister and he also was a two-time mayor for Chennai. The person who led the campaign for the assembly election held last time was Mr. Stalin himself. Due to the fact that Mr. Stalin was gaining grounds for gradual elevation to become Mr. Karunanidhi’s successor resulted in a rebellion by his own elder son and the soon-to-become chief’s elder brother MK Alagiri as he too was eyeing father’s throne.
But, after sensing the trouble, Mr. Karunanidhi took the crucial step of expelling MK Alagiri from the party in 2014. After his expulsion, he was not seen making any noise except rarely. He had held the post of union minister and was the party’s Organizing Secretary (South).
Now, he is said to be opposing Mr. Stalin’s becoming the party president. During his father’s memorial, he claimed that the loyalists of his father were with him, which was countered by the camp on Mr. Stalin’s side as an “empty rhetoric”. He is seen to be wishing to be taken back into the party, but as per the insider’s version, there is no such possibility for his re-entry into the party. The loyalists are seen to be backing Mr. Stalin in a solid way.
