New Delhi: Ahead of Teacher’s Day to be celebrated on September 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will felicitate national award-winning teachers on Tuesday here.
National Awards for the year 2017 will be conferred by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu to the teachers on September 5.
According to a statement issued by the government, the selection of the award-winning teachers was done under revised guidelines with the aim of selecting those who had shown innovation in their work and had added value to the school and to their students.
“The number of awardees was brought down to just 45 as this was necessary to restore the prestige of the awards. Under the earlier scheme, the number of awardees had crossed 300,” the statement said.
The statement further said that the nominated teachers gave a presentation last month before an independent jury which comprised a senior educationist. The process ensured that each one of them got an opportunity to place before the jury their contribution and the work done by them.
In total, the number of applications received from the teachers from across the country was 6,692. From those applications, three best teachers were selected from every district and forwarded these to the committee under the state secretary of education who prepared a short-list.
In the end, there were 152 nominations that were received from all states, union territories and organizations after which a final selection process was done by an independent jury, the statement added.
As per the revised guidelines, the application can be done by all regular teachers and there is no condition of minimum 15 years of service which was mandatory earlier. The teachers were very fortunate to get a chance to apply directly for themselves for the award. Self-nominations from teachers was done through online mode.
The occasion was chosen ahead of Teacher’s day to be observed and celebrated on 5th of September.
In India the Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the birth date of the second President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, that is 5 September 1888 and these celebrations are going since 1962. During the whole day, teachers and students come to the school but instead of activities and classes, celebrations are observed through thanks and remembrance. In some of the schools, senior students become acting teachers in order to show their appreciation for the school’s teachers. This continues almost till the end of th day.
