A National Level Indian Volleyball player was thrashed to death in Kolkata on Friday. Sangita Aich is a 14-year-old girl and represented India at the U-14 level twice. She was beaten in front all her teammates at Notunpukur near Kolkata. She was a stalwart of Bengal junior setup.
According to police reports, she was allegedly murdered by her stalker Subrata Sinha (20), for opposing thwarting his advances on several occasions. Sinha reached Sangita’s training camp, demanding to meet her. As she refused to do so, he approached her with a big blade and slashed her multiple times.
Though Sangita’s teammates tried to stop Sinha, by hitting him with a chair, but the beating was to no avail. Helpless Sangita ran towards her home, located 200m away from the camp. However, Sinha caught her and severely thrashed her to death.
“Suddenly, some people rushed over and said hurry up your niece has been attacked. I ran to her. she was bleeding and writhing in pain. I dragged her down to the main road. I tried to get a rickshaw. Many refused. Finally, one rickshaw took us to hospital but then they said she was dead,” said victim’s uncle.
A resident of Shyamnagar, Sangita’s parents revealed that Sinha had threatened her on multiple occasions. He had even called their house several times. Police had started the investigation but are yet to find the alleged perpetrator.
