In a horrible incident took place in Punjab’s Lahore, a Pakistani teenage girl was soaked in petrol and was burned alive on Wednesday. The shocking news is that this was done by the victim’s own mother and brother. According to the Police investigation, it is said that they killed her for marrying a man of her own choice.
The girl was identified as Zeenat who is 18-year-old and was spot dead. “We have arrested the mother of Zeenat and are looking for her brother for allegedly setting her on fire, killing her on the spot,” police spokesman Nayyab Haider said. Parveen denied the involvement of her son in killing Zeenat.
He said Zeenat’s mother Parveen told the police in custody that her daughter had committed an “unforgivable” crime by marrying a man after eloping with him. Zeenat fell in love with Hasan and he asked her parents to accept his marriage proposal. The girl’s parents refused and what happened next is Zeenat got married to Hasan.
According to the Police, they said that Zeenat contacted her parents to forgive for marrying without their willingness. Parveen replied saying that her family members had accepted her and she should return to home and meet the family. However, Zeenat agreed to return. On her return, Zeenat was tortured by her mother and brother and doused petrol and burnt her. Police have registered a case against Parveen, her son and two unidentified men.
Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken strict notice of the incident and directed Lahore police chief Amin Wains to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice. According to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, around 800 women were killed last year in Punjab in “honour killings”. Some strict rules had to be introduced by the Government to protect women.
