Plastic Bags Under 50 Microns To Be Banned In Hyderabad

Plastic consists of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic compounds that are malleable. Hence, our governments implemented some rules against using the plastic in fewer amounts. Earlier, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) implemented a rule of the plastic ban from 40 microns weight. But now it is enhanced to 50 microns.

Stating that the authorities would take serious action against the violators, the Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Ram Mohan said, “It has also been observed that these plastic bags are being thrown in open naalaas. Nearly 70% of blockages in the naalaas are caused by plastic waste. The GHMC is planning to depute 200 volunteers for controlling the usage of plastic bags below 50 microns.”

GHMC Authorities said that ‘People who organise events in open spaces which involve food and packaging will have to manage the waste generated in accordance with MSW Rules 2000.’ In this regard, GHMC Commissioner Janardhan Reddy had read some rules as follows.

  • Plastic bag manufacturers must register with the GHMC and pay the Plastic Waste Management fee as prescribed by the Urban Local Body.
  • Only registered shopkeepers/vendors shall be eligible to provide plastic carry bags.
  • Violators shall be liable to pay such fines as specified under bye-laws of ULB.
