Researchers Successfully Develop Nano-Filter That Helps In Cleaning Water 100 Times Faster

The problem of ever-increasing water pollution devoid general public access to clean water in remote areas. Many people today are dependent on the government to supply clean water that too may come sometimes contaminated by some pollutants or the other. Or else they depend upon private agencies to bring them the water at home at a cost.

Water is essential to life and without it, life cannot survive anywhere on the planet. There have many machines built to get clean water. But lately, the same comes at a cost with the machines being commercially sold are not fit for the poor people to buy.

But scientists have been researching in this regard to come up with solutions to the problems being faced in accessing clean water.

One such attempt was made by Australian scientists recently, who had Friday claimed that they have developed a Nano-filter that can help in cleaning contaminated water 100 times faster than the existing technology and this, in turn, implies that we have better access to the crucial resource worldwide.

The filter helps in filtering the water by removing oils and heavy metals like lead through an alloy that combines gallium based liquid metals with aluminum thus helping to absorb contaminants with aluminum oxide compounds, RMIT University said in a statement about the latest development which was done by involving researchers from the University of New South Wales, reports Xinhua news agency.

The issue of water contamination is still the most significant challenge worldwide as one out of nine people have no access to clean water near their home and heavy metal contamination “causes serious health problems and children are particularly vulnerable”, RMIT researcher Ali Zavabeti said.

“Our new Nano-filter is sustainable, environmentally-friendly, scalable and low cost,” said Zavabeti, whose team’s research findings were published in the Advanced Functional Materials scientific journal.

“Previous research has already shown the materials we used are effective in absorbing contaminants like mercury, sulphates and phosphates. With further development and commercial support, this new Nano-filter could be a cheap and ultra-fast solution to the problem of dirty water.”

Further development in this regard may help in building an apparatus which will be commercially viable in the market. But the low-cost feature is what we are talking about. This would greatly help to provide such apparatus to the poor people, who in turn can use it get pure water even if they have contaminated water nearby.
