A group of Scientists has developed world’s first flexible sheet camera which can be wrapped around any object to capture the image. A normal conventional camera cannot achieve this feat. An Indian-origin team also took part in developing this camera. This is the next generation camera sheet which has the capability to revolutionize the way clicking images and carrying the camera.
This sheet camera works with an array of a lens which can adapt its optical properties according to the frame, just like liquid adapting the shape of a container. This induced flexibility of the camera sheet and its optical adaptation enables it to capture high-quality images over a wide range of sheet deformations.
The author of the study, Shree K Nayar from Columbia University said, “While the camera industry has made remarkable progress in shrinking the camera to a tiny device with ever increasing imaging quality, we are exploring a radically different approach to imaging.”
Nayar said that this camera contains basically two parts, a flexible detector array and a thin optical system to project a high-quality image on the array. Conventional cameras have hard and inflexible lens with fixed focus length may lead to a distorted image with missing information. However, this problem is solved by the scientists.
They designed a camera using a lens with variable focus length that could be bent in any direction to capture good quality pictures.
