United Nations: On the occasion of Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary celebrations here, A group of Sikhs staged a demonstration against the atrocities being meted out to the minorities and Dalits of India.
Some of them were wearing black turbans and others, black bands. The held up posters and silently turned their backs on India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin as he spoke on Friday.
Undisturbed, Akbaruddin continued with his speech, and there was no action taken inside the conference room to stop the protesters.
The president of the Youth Akali Dal (Amritsar) US, Amandeep Singh told News Agencies that the group wanted to “expose the hypocrisy” of the Indian government who are celebrating Ambedkar’s birthday before the world while his ideals were being violated in India by the atrocities against Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and Dalits.
He reminded that the Golden Temple was violated and thousands of Sikhs have been killed at that time and later during riots no action has been taken against many important persons who were responsible for the killings.
Singh said that the protests were held on behalf of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar, Punjab).
As the protesters made a line outside the conference room, they were stopped by security personnel, who confiscated all of their posters and all the papers they had and let them go with a warning that such activities were not allowed inside the UN.
Several security personnel who included emergency services officers in black uniforms rushed to the conference room entrance, but only a couple of them were able to enter the room unobtrusively to keep watch.
There have been many reports of violence against Minorities and Dalits of India in various parts of the country since the rise of the BJP to power in 2014.
