A suspected poacher was eaten by lions near the Kruger National Park in South Africa and left the head of the poacher behind.
Moatshe Ngoepe, the spokesperson of the Limpopo Police, released a statement about the incident.
Ngoepe said, “It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions.”
Ngoepe added, “They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains.”
The man that was killed is a suspected poacher, he was mauled to death by the pride of lions that he was hunting.
The incident happened in the province of Limpopo of Northeastern South Africa.
The lions attacked and killed the poacher near the Kruger National Park at the Hoedspruit private game park.
The lions left the head of the poacher.
Initially, authorities said the dead man was a park employee and a tractor driver that went missing.
A loaded hunting rifle was also found nearby the area, this led the authorities to believe that the man was a poacher.
Authorities are having a hard time trying to identify the man that was killed by the lions.
Ngoepe said, “The process of identifying the deceased has already commenced, and it might be made possible by the fact that his head is amongst the remains that were found at the scene.”
Animal poaching is banned in South Africa, but even after the massive ban, poachers are on the rise.
