Spain’s Conservatives Elect Right-Wing Leader

Madrid: Spain has elected a traditionalist as their leader in the recent election as they want to re-establish their separate and clear political identity. A major role was played by the conservationists two months after they were removed from the government.

The leader, Pablo Casado won the elections with a clear majority in the ballot of People’s Party (PP) members, and launched his mandate along with a call for the unity in the party in particular and a stronger Spain in general at the heart of Europe and more tougher laws to prevent any moves towards independence near its regions.

He received a total of 1,701 votes in a ballot of lawmakers and some other senior PP members, easily passing away the challenge put by Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, who received a total of 1,250. She had earlier served as deputy to former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s during his reign in office for over six years.

In June, Rajoy was removed from the post after a no-confidence vote as his authority was undermined by a corruption scandal with the involvement of PP officials. Apart from that, he was in utter failure to quell an illegal independence drive in Catalonia’s northeastern region.

Due to the leadership race that exposed the inner divisions inside the party, Casado clearly told members in his acceptance speech: “The PP is back. We can’t waste another minute speaking about ourselves. We must start talking about Spain again.”

Along with that, he also wanted to strengthen the penal code to counter any further secessionist moves inside the country.

The elected lawmaker is from the northern Spanish city of Palencia, Casado and joined the PP in the year 2003. He pressed on the need for a return to traditional conservative values of “life and family” and is on record as opposing abortion.

Due to Rajoy’s departure, the Socialists found space into the office, and now in office, Casado will face one of the most crucial first decision up to the extent that the PP should give parliamentary support to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s minority government.

While congratulating Casado on Twitter, Sanchez said that he wished he will also be the PP’s next candidate for prime minister post – “strength for the task ahead” and along with that, the government would strive for economic growth and a restructured welfare state.

Casado criticized plans by the Socialists to increase taxes, a move that was signaling likely tensions between the two parties over fiscal issues and said that he would push for lower income and corporate taxes to further competitiveness.
