Speculation rife over Bharat Ratna awardees as government orders 5 medallions

Speculation abounds about the identity of the winners Bharat Ratna this year, even if the government ordered a 5 medallions Mint RBI. Two names that have been discussed most frequently are those of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and senior leader of the BJP, Atal Behari Vajpayee.


The winner this year, Sachin Tendulkar, continues to garner controversy as politicians question their choice of hockey legend Major Dhyanchand. Rahul Mehra, spokesman ANI AAP says, “I’m not saying that Sachin Tendulkar did not deserve it, but I think important Dhyanchand should have been the first athlete to receive this award.” Agree, CPI leader reflected: “Sachin Tendulkar cricket can be honored through what is the national sport of India, namely, hockey, has not honored yet?”

Mehra also wondered if, by Bharat Ratna presentating several people in the same year, is falling against the honor of the prize.

The family members of those analyzed for the prize had different views on the matter. Karuna Shukla, niece ANI Vajpayee said, “If this were to happen, it would be a great honor for the family has since been an inspiration to many.”

However, Sugata Bose, nephew of Netaji, told ANI that he hoped “there is no basis for this speculation.” Speaking to ANI, Bose said, “I think SC Bose and Gandhiji should stay above Bharat Ratna. Deserves SC Vishwa Ratna Bose because I feel he is on par with the Father of the Nation.”
