Supreme Court: AICTE Approval Not Mandatory for IGNOU B.Tech Degrees/ Diploma Courses – World’s largest open university, Indira Gandhi National Open University, providing distance education in double-digit courses has again captured the headlines after extending it’s admission dates to 16th August 2018. Numerous months back, 21 students of Indira Gandhi National Open University who successfully grabbed their Bachelors of Technology Diplomas and Degrees respectively, filed the petition under the Supreme Court of India. And, the final decision for the same was disclosed by Indu Malhotra and Rohinton Fali Nariman (bench of justices) on 30th July 2018.
Authorised by Constitution of India and the highest court within the hierarchy of courts in many legal jurisdictions – Supreme Court of India in its latest decision has confirmed that IGNOU will no longer need to wait for the permission of statutory body and a national-level council for technical education, under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development – All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for offering Bachelor of Technology Degrees and Diplomas.

Earlier, the last date to apply online was 31st July 2018 for Admission into July sessions of Indira Gandhi National Open University. Now, applicants looking for admission into Distance Educational Top University, they may apply on official website www.ignou.ac.in, for Master, Bachelor, Diploma and Certificate Courses. This order is just opposite of what Supreme Court of India ordered back in November 2017. In the previous order by Supreme Court of India (SCI), complete inclusion was observed for Justice Adarsh Goyal and U U Lalit (Justice Bench of Supreme Court of India).
