This Is How A Taxi Driver Got Rs 9,806 Crores In His Jan-Dhan Account

Demonetization did wipe out some of the cash sitting in warehouses and suitcases of political parties and businessmen. While banks are running out of cash within hours because of funds shortage, here is a Jan-Dhan account of a taxi driver Balwinder Singh that reportedly credited Rs 98,05,95,12,231 (9806 Crores).

Singh got the shock and also experienced the happiest moment when he received a text message on his phone that an amount of Rs 98,05,95,12,231 was credited to his State Bank of Patiala (SBoP) account. But the happiness was short-lived because the money was debited from his account the very next day.

Balvinder Singh Account Credited With Rs. 9805 Crore:

Going into details, Balvinder who earns a maximum of Rs. 500 a day, received a message stating his bank account has been credited with Rs. 9806 Crores. He immediately ran to the bank.

“I made many rounds of the bank, but nobody listened to me. Instead, they kept my passbook with them on November 7, and issued a new passbook without the gigantic entry,” said Singh. “I had opened the account under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). My balance usually is around Rs 3,000,” he added.

Branch manager Ravinder Kumar refused to divulge any details. “An investigation by income tax (I-T) officials is on,” he said.

Balvinder Singh Account Statement:

Lead bank manager Sandeep Garg, however, had quite a simple explanation for the freak occurrence. “The account holder happens to be a designated vendor for the bank. While passing a credit entry of Rs 200, an assistant manager (accounts) wrongly inserted the bank’s 11-digit internal Banking General Ledger account number in the amount column. The mistake was noticed the next day, following which the entry was reversed,” he said. However, the bank did not tell Singh about the error immediately.

A team of income tax staff from Barnala, Sangrur and Patiala carried out investigation till midnight (Nov 28th).
