Bengaluru: The next store of massive IKEA store is planned to come at the country’s software capital Bengaluru by 2020. If opened, it will be third such in the country. The first store of the Swedish furniture and home products giant was opened up in Hyderabad two ago. The second is coming up at Mumbai next year.
The ceremony for the proposed construction of the 5,00,000 square feet outlet was held today in Nagasandra. The area is almost as big as in Hyderabad.
The venture has got backing from the Karnataka state government. Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, who attended the event, told News Agencies, “They have already promised that they will appoint 750 people — 50% of them women. That is their policy I am told. It is wonderful. This investment, I think about 1500 crores. They will be investing much more even in future.”
Patrik Antoni, who is the Deputy Country Manager at IKEA store in India, is very much hopeful about India’s response to the store. As for now, the store at Hyderabad is a big success.
“India is of course a market where it will make a big difference for a range of people as we are coming with a range of products and furniture that is affordable. This building, that will come up, is about 1,000 crore,” he added.
According the company, the new store will help in opening up 1000 jobs. “It will be sustainable. It will have solar panels, LED lights… We are trying to make really low impact wherever we go,” he added.
IKEA first opened up its store in India at Hyderabad in August and the store received a good response with large number of customers from the techies of the city. Many of those customers are accustomed with the brand name as they have seen it in abroad. The store has got about 7,500 products – the range also includes about 1,000 products priced below Rs. 200.
IKEA’s forth store is planned to be built in Delhi, soon after Bengaluru get its store. After this phase is over, the next phase will see IKEA would cover Ahmedabad, Surat, Chennai, Pune and Kolkota. At the end, the company has got plans to open up at least 40 such stores all across the country.
IKEA is based in Sweden and is ready-to-assemble furniture seller along with products like kitchen appliances and home accessories.
