In his farewell speech in the Rajya Sabha, poet-writer Javed Akhtar slams the AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi has recently sparked agitation amongst the people as he commented that he will not chant “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. “I don’t chant that slogan. I won’t utter that even if you put a knife to my throat,” Owaisi spoke after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said the new generation needs to be taught to chant slogans hailing mother India.
In his last speech in the Rajya Sabha, Javed Akhtar said that he would cherish his memories of his stint in the upper house as they were ‘keemti’ (precious) but also came down heavily on AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. Without naming Owaisi, Javed said: “He said he will not say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ as the constitution does not require him to say so. But, the same constitution does not ask him to wear sherwani and cap either. I don’t care to know whether saying ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ is my duty or not, it is my right.”

He further goes on to say that it will be better if the political leaders concentrate on the development of the state and reduce the “fringe” that has been growing within the people of the nation.
