The wife of Alton’s Mayor was arrested by the police for not following the stay at home order that was set out by the Illinois Government.
Mayor Brant Walker of Alton released a statement on Facebook and talked about what actually happened.
The mayor said that the chief of the Alton Police reached out to him at around 1 am on Sunday.
Authorities were investigating and stopping by at a gathering at an Alton bar that was violating the stay at home order of Illinois.
Mayor Walker confirmed that his wife was part of the party.
The chief of the police also informed him that his wife was among the people that were busted for partying.
In the statement that was released by Mayor Walker, he said:
“My wife is an adult capable of making her own decisions, and in this instance, she exhibited a stunning lack of judgment. She now faces the same consequences for her ill-advised decision as the other individuals who chose to violate the ‘Stay At Home’ order during this incident.”
Mayor Walker said he instructed the chief of the police to treat his wife just like every citizen that violated the order of the state.
The Alton Police Department confirmed that they were investigating complaints against the Hiram’s Tavern, which was continuously opening its doors on the weekends despite the fact that the state has ordered everyone to stay home.
On Sunday, the police saw a number of people inside the bar, leading them to go inside.
As a result, everyone inside the bar, which includes the wife of the mayor, was given a criminal complaint about reckless conduct, which is a Class A misdemeanor charge.
Hiram Lewis, the owner of the bar, had an active warrant for his arrest for domestic battery in Madison County.
Officers took him into custody.
Mayor Walker said that he was embarrassed by the incident and offered an apology for the incident.
He said, “My first and most important priority is the safety and well-being of the citizens of Alton. We are in the midst of a national public health crisis, and I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that your health is protected, including enforcing the Governor’s statewide ‘Stay At Home’ order.’”
