Chinese Man Dies After Contracting Deadly Hantavirus

A Chinese man has died after contracting the deadly Hantavirus.

The incident reportedly happened in the Yunnan Province, which is located in Southwest China.

According to reports, the man died on Monday (March 23, 2020) after falling critically ill with the deadly disease.

The incident was first announced to the public by the Global Times.

The news said, “He was tested positive for hantavirus. 32 other people were also tested.”

The man tested positive for the Hantavirus and got negative for the novel coronavirus.

No other hantavirus cases were reported in the state.

An official investigation has been launched, said the Xinhua News Agency.

The city in China has already started to screen and monitor people that they believe may have the Hantavirus.

A special team has been sent to the Ningshan County for a response to the Hantavirus.

The man, who was working for an aquatic company in the Shandong Province in East China, got the Hantavirus when he was passing through the county.

He died at 7 am on Monday.

Samples of an additional 2 people with fever and other people that were with the man have been gathered so they can be screened.

What Is The Hantavirus And What Are Its Symptoms?

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied disease syndromes in people worldwide.  Infection with any hantavirus can produce hantavirus disease in people. Hantaviruses in the Americas are known as “New World” hantaviruses and may cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Other hantaviruses, known as “Old World” hantaviruses, are found mostly in Europe and Asia and may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

Symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea

The Hantavirus is fatal, it has a mortality rate of 38 percent.
