An unnamed man, who has contracted the coronavirus, is currently facing the death penalty for spitting on shopping trolleys in a shopping center.
The man was arrested by the police after workers spotted him spitting in the northern Saudi Arabian Province of Hail.
While in custody, the man, who turns out to be a foreign national, tested positive for the coronavirus.
The authorities did not reveal the nationality of the man.
It is still unclear if the man was aware of his diagnosis when he spat in the shopping center.
Officials said: “His act is considered among major crimes.”
If the authorities in Saudi Arabia conclude that the man knew that he had the virus, he could be charged with attempted murder.
Attempted murder carries the death penalty in Saudi Arabia, where most of the executions are done through beheadings.
The police said: “This behavior is religiously and legally condemned. It is regarded as imparting corruption by deliberately seeking to spread the coronavirus epidemic among members of society and stirring panic among them.”
After the incident, authorities asked everyone who visited the affected store to get tested for the virus.
Authorities are currently scanning the CCTV footage of the shop to make sure the areas that he spat in.
As of writing this article, the coronavirus cases all over the world have reached 601,536.
The official death toll is currently at 27,441.
