Musician Sentenced To Death For Posting “Blasphemous” Song In WhatsApp Group Chat

A 22-year-old musician was sentenced to death for posting a blasphemous song in a WhatsApp group chat.

It is reported that the song was insulting Prophet Muhammad.

The musician has been identified as Yahaya Sharif-Aminu. He is facing being hanged to death.

The incident happened in Kano, Nigeria.

Outrage against the singer grew after the recording went viral earlier this year.

The house of the man was also destroyed by locals after the incident. His father was also forced to flee their own house to avoid being beaten to death.

The conviction of Sharif has been called by many as “travesty of justice” amidst calls for his life to be spared.

Legal court documents suggest that he was found guilty of making an “a blasphemous statement against Prophet Mohammed in a WhatsApp Group”.

Making fun of Prophet Mohammad is an offense that is punishable by death.

He was sentenced under the Kano State Sharia Penal Code.

Sharif admitted the charges that are placed against him during his trial.

He does not have a lawyer and he later told the Sharia court that he had made a mistake in making the song.

Sharif was arrested by the police in March this year by the Hisbah Corps, a police force that enforces the strict Sharia law in the state.

A petition is calling the authorities to overturn the sentence that has been signed by over eighty thousand people and counting.

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the governor of the state, said that he will be singing the death warrant of the singer as soon as the appeal process gets exhausted.,

He said that he will sign it without any hesitation.

People on social media are currently spreading the news to help save Sharif.
