Pakistan High-Court Rules That Men Can Marry Minors If They’ve Had Their First Period

A bizarre new ruling at a Pakistan Court is causing a huge debate on social media and between child rights activists after the court ruled that men can marry minors if they have had their first period.

In Pakistan, men can marry underage girls in accordance with the Sharia Law as long as they have had their menstrual cycle.

On February 3, 2020, the Sindh High Court in Karachi, Pakistan, gave the bizarre ruling in the case of Huma Younus, a 14-year-old girl, who was kidnapped, forcibly converted to the religion of Islam, and was married to a Muslim adult.

Huma was married to the adult in October 2019.

The parents of Huma went to the police and the High Court seeking justice in the matter.

Naila Inayat, a well-known journalist in Pakistan, interviewed Nagina Younas, the mother of Huma, last year.

At the time, Nagina asked about the fate of Christians in Pakistan.

Nagina asked, “Should Christian mothers kill their daughters if conversion and kidnapping is their fate in Pakistan?”

Despite the fact that the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act forbids marriage under the age of 18, the High-Court did not charge the people in the case.
