9 people, which include 4 kids, were killed and 51 others wounded in shootings in Chicago’s violent weekend.
3-year-old Mekay James was amongst the 4 children that were fatally struck in the back on Saturday at around 6:30 pm in Austin, which is located on the West Side of the city.
James died after someone in a blue Honda vehicle pulled up behind the black SUV that the 27-year-old father of the boy was driving. Several rounds were fired on the car, said the Chicago Sun-Times.
The father of the 3-year-old was gazed in the abdomen and was the intended target.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the shooting “a heinous, unconscionable act of cowardice, adding that the boy had his whole life ahead of him.
2 hours after that incident, a 13-year-old girl from Austin was killed. 2 other teenage boys were injured in another spray of gunfire.
Amaria J. Jones was fatally hit in the neck as she sat inside her home. The teen boys, who are 15 and 16 years old, were sitting on a porch when one of them noticed a red laser pointing at him and heard gunfire.
The younger boys were struck with bullets in their back and in the leg. They are currently in a hospital in good condition.
Hours before that, a man shot and killed Jasean Francis, a 17-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old boy in South Chicago. They were in an alley at around 5:10 pm when they were gunned down.
Also on the evening of Saturday, the police responded to reports of a shooting at 7:46 pm in Austin and found 2 men injured on the sidewalk, where a 27-year-old man died of gunshot wounds to the torso. The other man, who is 32, sustained gunshot wounds on his left foot.
1 hour before that, a 23-year-old man was shot in the neck during a fight in Logan Square, which is located on the Northwest Side of Chicago.
On the evening of Friday, 2 men were reportedly killed in separate shootings on the West Side of the city.
33-year-old Johny Teajue was hit in the neck during a drive-by shooting that happened at around 9:52 pm in Austin, Chicago.
Almos Collum, a 33-year-old man, was killed when someone fired into his vehicle from another car at around 10:49 pm on Friday in Garfield Park, Chicago.
On Sunday, the latest shooting happened. 41-year-old Alexis Perez was shot dead during a fatal shooting, which also left 3 other men injured. The incident happened in the Humboldt Park of Chicago’s West Side.
