Longest Total Lunar Eclipse of The Century will occur on July 27th: Blood Moon 2018

Next month on July 27th, you are going to witness the longest total lunar eclipse of the century. This lunar eclipse is a rare astronomical phenomenon as a blood moon, and it will occur at night of July 27th and 28th.

 

This blood moon will last for 1 hour and 43 minutes which makes it the longest total lunar eclipse of the century. According to lunar scientist Noah Petro, this whole event of the astronomical phenomenon will last for 4 hours.

This type of lunar eclipse has happened before this year on January 31st. The total lunar eclipse took places on January 31st was lasted for 40 minutes and known as ‘Super Blue Blood Moon.’ This astronomical phenomenon was a combination of multiple events.

Super Blue Blood Moon was a combination of Supermoon, blue moon and a blood moon. This type of lunar eclipse took place before in India in 1982.

A supermoon is an event where a full moon reaches to the closest distance to the earth in its elliptic orbit. Due to the distance between earth and moon, the moon looks more prominent in size than it’s usual form.

What is Blood Moon?

 

 

Blood Moon is a rare astronomical phenomenon which takes place because of a lunar eclipse. When the earth comes in line between the sun and the moon, the sunlight scatters through the earth’s atmosphere. The gaseous layer which is in earth’s atmosphere refracts the rays, and it causes the moon to appear dull red.

The blood moon happens twice a year.

Who can see Blood Moon?

As this is a most extended total lunar eclipse of the century, no one wants to miss a chance to see it. According to lunar scientist Noah Petro, it will only be visible to eastern hemisphere which includes Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. North America will not be able to witness this event.

 

 

People living in Asia and Australia will witness it in early hours of the morning on July 28th and those living in Europe, and Africa will be able to see it during the evening on July 27th.
