“I Wanted To Pick Up The Stump And Stab Virat Kohli” Says Australian Opener Ed Cowan

Currently, the Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli is arguably the most consistent and successful batsman across all the three formats of the game. Virat is the most successful batsman across all three formats currently playing and is also the most consistent.

In the last 5 years or so, Kohli has worked extremely hard on his game and established himself as one of the modern day greats of the game. Virat Kohli is still very young but he has achieved some extra ordinary things in the game of cricket. On top of that, he is the captain of the squad and is also the holder of some of the biggest records in international cricket.

This makes each and every cricketer in the world to send him to the pavilion as soon as possible. In a recent interview, recalling a run-in with Virat Kohli, former Australia opener Ed Cowan said he once felt like picking up the stump and stab the current India captain after being told something “highly inappropriate”.

Team India got the better of Australia in the Test series 2-1 at home in one of the most intense but bitterly fought series in March 2017. The series also marked by one controversy after another with the two captains Virat Kohli and Steve Smith in the eye of a raging storm.

Cowan said that once Virat said something very inappropriate about his sick mother during a Test match and it made him very angry. “I had a very sick Mum during one of those series and he said something that was inappropriate,” Ed Cowan was quoted.

“Why I make the point of ‘lost in translation’, he said something that was highly inappropriate. A personal matter that was highly sensitive. Highly inappropriate. But he didn’t realize that he’d overstepped the mark until the umpire came over and said ‘Virat that’s overstepped the mark’ and once that was said, he took a step back and apologized. But, there was a moment I wanted to pick up the stump and stab him.”

Cowan also said that Kohli is a phenomenal cricketer and he is a huge fan of his cricket, but he chose very inappropriate words against Cowan when toured Australia.

“I’m a huge fan of his cricket. Don’t get me wrong he’s a phenomenal cricketer. I had a little bit of a run-in that was inappropriate when he toured Australia and the umpire had to intervene. We forget that English isn’t their first language. It’s very easy to sit back and say as a player they’re barking something at me that is inappropriate when we don’t try and converse with them in Hindi,” concluded Ed Cowan.

All these happened during the Test series between India and Australia in February and March earlier this year. Though it happened in the past, the statements of Ed Cowan are going viral before the Limited-over series against India. Ahead of the India vs Australia series, the visiting captain Steve Smith made comments on Virat Kohli saying, ‘We can keep Virat Kohli quiet in this series.’

The Australians have been targeting Kohli ever since he stopped short of calling Smith a ‘cheat’ following the DRS drama, involving the visiting skipper, in the second Test at Bengaluru. Cowan scored 1001 runs in 18 Tests with a best of 136.
