Ben Laughlin And Jake Weatherald Combine To Take ‘Catch Of The BBL’

The Adelaide Strikers secured a home Big Bash League semi-final against the Melbourne Renegades, but their emphatic 26-run win will forever be remembered for “the catch”. Big Bash League has thrown a highlight every season and came with the same this year too.

There was the seagull survival in the 2015 season, then the security guard who took a catch while sitting on the chair at the boundary ropes last season. Once again, Big Bash has given the cricket fans a rare moment in cricket.

These days, boundary relay catches are common and we now and then come across such catches. This time, a boundary relay marathon catch has happened for the first time. In the match between Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades, the crowd and the viewers saw a breathtaking catch when Laughlin and Weatherald combined to take what is now called the “best catch of BBL”.

The scorecard will show Dwayne Bravo was caught by Jake Weatherald off the bowling of Rashid Khan but that doesn’t come close to capturing the moment. In the 16th over of the match, Renegades were chasing 174.

Dwayne Bravo was facing Rashid Khan and the batsman needed to do something unbelievable to win the game for his team. Bravo lofted an off-drive which headed to the boundary rope when it was brilliantly caught by a sprinting Ben Laughlin.

The Strikers’ seamer then had the presence of mind to flick the ball 30m back into play as he fell over the boundary line. To the amazement, the ball hung in the air long enough for Weatherald to run around and take a superb diving catch.

Bravo departed for four runs with the score 5-100 and the Renegades’ hopes of an unlikely win went with him. However, Strikers lost the match by 45 runs but this catch became the highlight of the match probably one of the best catches in BBL.

Remarkably, this is not the first time two players from a Gillespie side have teamed up to take a wonderful catch after Aaron Finch and Adam Lyth did it twice in a matter of weeks for Yorkshire in 2014.
