With lots of twists and turns, the process of head coach selection for team India came to an end yesterday evening i.e, on Tuesday. Finally, after much drama, BCCI officially confirmed Ravi Shastri as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, the new man to lead the Indian team from the dressing room.
Reports on Tuesday evening had said that the former India cricketer is the new coach but BCCI- Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) denied it only to confirm it later.
India’s hunger for the right head coach began back in 2015. With Anil Kumble, the problem has been resolved for a year, but in effect of the differences Kumble has with skipper Virat Kohli, both went apart with the resignation of Anil Kumble from the position of National Head Coach.
Then the story took many twists and turns, a couple of names like Sehwag and Tom Moody also sounded high on the table. On Tuesday midnight, despite the various concerns, Ravi Shastri finally emerged as the successor of the position, being the team’s personal favorite and his already ensembling good company with skipper Virat Kohli is all that justified him to be the next Coach.
BCCI also declared the other staff who will be assisting Shastri and the names are
- Former Fast Bowler Zaheer Khan was given the role of the bowling coach for the team
- Former India skipper Rahul Dravid was given the role of batting consultant for specific overseas tours.
Meanwhile, in a statement released the BCCI said,
“Ravi Shastri has been the Team Director in the past, and brings with him a wealth of experience, both as a player and as coach. Zaheer is a contemporary cricketer who assumed the mentoring role to a young fast bowling unit even during his playing days with India. His inputs will be of immense value to our young fast bowlers, who have shown tremendous potential in the last couple of years.”
It further added,
“As the Indian team is to play Test cricket overseas in the next two years, Rahul Dravid’s expertise as batting consultant will be immensely helpful for youngsters.”

Overseas tours is where the challenge lies. If Dravid batting ‘consultant’ and Zaheer bowling coach, is Shastri more “team director” again?

Batting, especially overseas, will be tested and will need help…can’t have a better man than Rahul Dravid for that role. Good move again 👍
