OPPO Replaces STAR India As Indian Cricket Team Sponsor, Signs 5 Yr Deal With BCCI

Chinese Smartphone firm Oppo on Tuesday became the new sponsor of the Indian cricket team, replacing broadcasting giants Star India. Star India had made it clear that it would not seek a renewal of its sponsorship deal, which was to end next month.

Star India took over as the Indian cricket team’s sponsor in 2013 from Sahara, which was declared ineligible by the Board. Star India had refused to extend their contract citing a lack of clarity in the board. The deal with OPPO will start from April 2017 and Oppo mobiles will be Indian team’s new sponsor for a period of 5 years.

In a major announcement, Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has confirmed Oppo as its new sponsor on Tuesday morning. Oppo will replace Star on India’s jersey after the latter’s contract ran out. BCCI had released tender asking for bids and has now confirmed Oppo as the new sponsor.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce Oppo Mobiles India Private Limited as the new team sponsor for the Indian Cricket Team,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

“The mobile manufacturing giant Oppo’s association with BCCI will start from April 2017 for a period of five years,” it added.

New Jersey’s For Indian Team:

Since India is not scheduled to play any international match in April and May due to IPL, fans may get to see new jersey’s in the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled to begin in June.

The new deal means the jerseys of India’s senior team, Under-19 team, India-A team and also of the India’s women team will have the Oppo written on them instead of Star from now on. It was expecting the highest bid to be of over Rs. 500 Crore, but the new deal was signed for Rs. 1079 Crores which is five times more than the previous deal.

In next five years, India is scheduled to play a total of 259 international matches which includes 238 bilateral matches and 21 across ICC tournaments. The team sponsor gets to have its commercial logo on the both the men’s and women’s kits.
