Worst DRS Appeal Ever: Bangladesh Batsman Soumya Sarkar Takes DRS After Getting Clean Bowled !!

Soumya Sarkar is one of Bangladesh’s most reliable batsman. But he is not so reliable while taking DRS calls it seems, as he in all probability became the first international cricketer to take review after getting bowled during Bangladesh’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

This perhaps was the first instance of a batsman opting for DRS after being bowled. With Bangladesh chasing a massive target of 457, opener Sarkar’s wicket was crucial. But what he did after getting bowled was astonishing – he went for a review! Even commentators were surprised by his decision, as replays showed he was clean bowled.

Asela Gunaratne, appealed for the wicket and umpire took relatively longer time to give Sarkar out. With the batsman himself unaware of the situation thought he was given caught behind and opted for DRS. The umpire eventually clarified that he was bowled and Sarkar had to take an embarrassing walk back to the hutch.

The ball after spinning away beat the outside edge and went on clip the top of the off-stump. Sarkar’s wicket proved to be a big blow for Bangladesh.

Sarkar scored 53 runs with the help of 6 fours and 1 six before getting out on Gunaratne. Sri Lanka won that match by 259 runs. That was one of the worst review in the history of cricket.

Bangladesh eventually lost the Test as they were bundled out for 197 while chasing 457 on day five. Rangana Herath was the wrecker-in-chief as he scalped six for 59 and became the most successful left-arm spinner in Test cricket. He surpassed former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori’s tally of 362 wickets.
