13-year-old Romina Ashrafi was killed with a farming sickle after fleeing her family home with a 34-year-old man after her father expressed outrage towards their plans to get married.
Ashrafi was beheaded in her sleep by her father in what has been described as an honor killing.
He did the horrible act after he found about her plans to marry a 34-year-old man.
The incident happened in their family house in Hovigh, Talesh county in Iran.
Local news agencies claim that 13-year-old had a plan to run out of their house to marry a man.
It is said that the teenage girl initially fled the family home with a 34-year-old man after her father expressed outrage at their plans to get married.
The laws in Iran means that girls could not marry after the age of 13, though the average age of marriage for women in Iran is 23.
After committing the crime, the father of Ashrafi handed himself in to the police and confessed the crimes.
He went to the police station while holding the bloodied murder weapon.
Kazem Razmi, the governor of the district, said that the father of the girl is currently being held in custody.
An official investigation into the case has been launched.
Masoumeh Ebtekar, the Vice President for Women’s Affairs, also announced a special order to investigate the murder.
If he gets convicted, the father could face up to 10 years in prison.
The father will not be facing the death penalty because he was the guardian of Romina.
The Islamic Penal Code exempts guardians from “qisas”, which is a type of retaliation.
Sharia law states that only blood owners or family members are allowed to demand execution for the murder of a relative.
