12 Israeli tourists have been detained in Cyprus after a 19-year-old woman from England claimed that she was raped by them.
The 19-year-old woman said that she was raped in Ayia Napa, the resort town.
The local police said that an investigation has been launched for the allegations the 19-year-old British woman made.
A police source said that it is still too early in the investigation to say anything about the allegations and it is still not clear about how many from the 12 detained were involved in raping the woman.
Local news media outlets report that a number of detained men are not even 18-years-old.
The 12 detained suspects are set to appear in a Famagusta District Court today for a custody hearing.
The Foreign Office of Israel released a statement about the incident, they said that they have been made aware of the allegations.
The department said, “The Israeli consul in Nicosia, Yossi Wurmbrand, is following developments and is in contact with the detainees.”
The department added, “Their families have been updated.”
The Ayia Napa, referred to as the resort town, is popular with young tourists for its beaches and nightlife.
3 years ago, George Low, a British tourist, was stabbed to death in the same resort town.
George was involved in a brawl in a pub, he and Ben Barker, his friend, were stabbed in the brawl.
