The Karnataka police have arrested 5 teenagers that went to a private college in Dakshina Kannada District of Karnataka for raping an 18-year-old Dalit girl and for distributing the rape video on social media that went viral. The police said that all students are 19-years-old.
The 5 students are currently facing rape, gang rape charges, and the law in India that protects all scheduled castes and tribes.
The 18-year-old girl went to the same college with the 5 students and said that she knew one of them. The teen is a member of the Dalit Community.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 4 of the students took the Dalit girl to a forest in their car and drugged her before raping her.
The girl was raped in the first week of March 2019.
The incident came into light after the video that the students took went viral on Social Media and on instant messaging applications.
The 5 students also threatened the Dalit girl and told her not to share the incident with anyone.
The rape videos show three boys assaulting the 18-year-old girl and raping her while she was drugged.
Officials arrested the three teenagers in the video, the person who took the video, and the person who was responsible for distributing the video.
B M Laxmi Prasad, the District Superintendent of Police, said that anyone who will share the illicit video will be facing charges and could be prosecuted.
The 5 students have been dismissed from the private college in Karnataka.
