Cyclone Kenneth, the strongest storm ever to hit Mozambique, brought in winds of 220 kilometers per hour. The storm comes less than a month after cyclone Idai hit the country in which hundreds of people were killed and destroyed many houses and infrastructures in large areas.

Heavy rain continued to fall till Friday which raised the fear of more heavy floods.

The government of Mozambique has requested its citizens to move to higher grounds, authorities are concerned that many people could be trapped in remote villages.

The country was still in its recovering phase after Cyclone Idai hit them last month, more than 900 were killed in 3 countries.

Cyclone Kenneth had already killed 3 people on Comoros, and one person has been reported dead in Mozambique, officials said that a falling tree caused the person’s death.

Weather experts from the UN said that it is rare for 2 cyclones that are really strong to hit Mozambique in the same year.

Winds did slow down on Friday, but the meteorological agency of France said that they are expecting up to 800mm of rain to land on Mozambique in the next few days.

The government of Mozambique is concerned about those areas that are prone to landslides and heavy flooding.

The World Food Program of the UN is currently working with the government of Mozambique on an “emergency preparedness plan”.

The INGC (National Institute of Disaster Management) of Mozambique said that more than 30,000 people have been evacuated from the areas that are affected the most.

Reports show that many homes have been destroyed and Pemba, a provincial capital city, has lost its electricity supply.

Cyclone Kenneth landed on Cabo Delgado on Thursday night, the wind speeds of the cyclone is almost equivalent to a category 4 hurricane.
