4 days after the Indian government approved a bill that would criminalize the verbal divorce, a man was charged for giving the Triple Talaq to his wife through a phone call in the district of Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.
An FIR was registered at the Nebua Naurangia Police Station.
According to Fatima Khatoon, the woman, her husband, Abdul Raheem, called her from Saudi Arabia and gave her a triple talaq by saying talaq three times.
Ahmed Ali, the father of Fatima, was also with her daughter when she registered a complaint at the police station.
Fatima and Abdul got married in 2014.
Abdul Raheem went to Saudi Arabia just after 4 months after they got married.
Fatima said that her husband frequently visited India but added that the behavior of her husband was not good with them and added that her parents and other family members harassed her.
Ahmed Ali, the father of Fatima, said, “On Wednesday when my daughter was busy in household chores, her father-in-law Tarabuddin gave her his mobile phone and asked to talk to her husband. Abdul Raheem pronounced “talaq” three times and cut the phone line.”
He added, “When we reached my daughter’s house, Tarabuddin called a panchayat, gave a cheque of Rs. 1.5 lakh and said the marriage is over.”
According to R N Mishra, the Superintendent of the Kushinagar Police, said, “The woman’s husband is in Saudi Arabia and we are sending a notice through the proper channel and also taking the statements of both the parties.”
If found guilty, Abdul Raheem can serve 3 years in prison for giving triple talaq to his wife.
