A Muslim woman was handed a triple talaq in Surat after her parents failed to give Rs. 40,000 to his husband in Dowry. The 23-year-old woman said that the money was going to be used to buy a rickshaw.

The Muslim woman has filed an FIR against her husband at the Chowk Bazar Police Station.

During an interview with ANI, the 23-year-old woman said that her husband gave her the Triple Talaq in front of her family members after her mother passed away.

PL Chaudhary, a senior police officer at the Chowk Bazar Police Station, said that the Muslim woman was tortured by her in-laws mentally and physically.

Officer Chaudhary added, “Her husband had asked for a dowry of Rs. 40,000 to buy a cycle-rickshaw, which they didn’t give. After that, she was given death threat and her husband asked her to leave the house after giving her triple talaq.”

On Thursday, the Lok Sabha passed a bill that criminalizes the Triple Talaq. The bill was passed with 302 votes in favor and 82 in opposition to the bill.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, will criminalize anyone who practices the instant divorce in the community of the religion.

Anyone who gets caught using the practice can face 3 years in jail.
