Erdogan Says Wife Of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi Has Been Captured By Turkey
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkey has captured the wife of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed earlier this year during a raid by the US Special Forces.
President Erdogan did not name the wife of Baghdadi, but he confirmed that the woman they captured is one of the wives Baghdadi had.
Erdogan said, “The US said that Baghdadi killed himself in a tunnel and started a serious PR campaign. We captured his wife but we didn’t make a fuss, I’m declaring this for the first time.”
During a press release done by President Donald Trump, the US President said 2 wives of Baghdadi were killed in the operation.
The new announcement done by Erdogan comes a day after Turkey announced that they have captured Rasmiya Awad, the sister of Baghdadi.
Rasmiya Awad was captured in Azaz, a northern town in Syria.
Authorities shared an image of Awad and her identity card with CNN and confirmed that they have arrested her.
Awad is 65-years-old, but there is not much known about her.
But Turkey authorities believe her capture is going to help them tackle ISIS in their region.
Turkey said, “This kind of thing is an intelligence gold mine. What she knows about ISIS can significantly expand our understanding of the group and help us catch more bad guys.”
Awad was captured by Turkey during a raid on a metal container housing unit in Azaz, Aleppo Province.
Along with Awad, authorities captured her husband, daughter-in-law, and 5 children. They are all being questioned by the authorities.
