No More Maggi: Its License Might Just Get Canceled Because Of High Levels Of Lead And MSG
India’s most loved fast instant food Nestle faces again a major criticism raising allegations and speculations over its ingredients and composition. Over more than a decade, Nestle Maggi has been the most loved instant fast food for all ages in India. People often as depicted in the commercial ads of the well acclaimed food substitute rely on the Nestle Maggi. Most widely consumed food Nestle Maggi is found to containing added monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lead in maximal levels than the permissible limits.
Nestle Maggi is a Silent Killer
A survey conducted by the Lucknow Food Safety and Drug Administration disclosed shocking facts. These facts lead the Food Safety and Drug Administration to file a complaint with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in New Delhi to cancel the license for Maggi. Food Safety and Drug Administration also requested FSSAI to examine the quality of Nestle Maggi all over India.
FSDA Assistant Commissioner Vijay Bahadur Yadav said “We have tested Maggi samples at Kolkata’s referral laboratory. The test results show that there are added monosodium glutamate and excess of lead. We have ordered further sampling.” To the contrary manufacturer of Maggi, Nestle conveyed its disapproval of adding monosodium glutamate to the esteemed product and decried the comportment of lead in Maggi. Nestle said that it is a surprisal for it to come across allegations that their product Maggi consists excess levels of lead in it.

The Spokesperson of Nestle stated that “We do not add MSG to MAGGI Noodles and glutamate, if present, may come from naturally occurring sources. Food regulators in India also do not specify any limit for the presence of MSG / Glutamate” addressing the issue of excess lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Nestle Spokesperson further added “We are surprised with the lead content supposedly found in the sample. We monitor the lead content regularly as part of regulatory requirements, and tests at our own accredited laboratories as well as those by independent external accredited laboratories have consistently shown the results to be well within the permissible limit.”

On the other hand Nestle claimed that official records of it states that its product Maggi has negligible lead content which is less than 1 % of the fixed limit.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is a kind of amino acid and is found in most of the agricultural products naturally while in most of the food products it is being added artificially to enhance flavor. Food experts and the regulators claim that adding such amino acids artificially is harmful to health for children’s and elders too. As per norms it is must that every company should mention the quantity of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) to make the user and consumer being aware of the ingredients.
Senior official FSSAI told that “Enforcement of the Act lies with state government and they must keep a stringent check. Once we receive communication from the state, we will certainly examine and take immediate cognizance.” On the other hand, Nestle has been claiming that it has been maintaining and administering Maggi noodles with all applicable food laws and regulations. Nestle India also affirmed that it has not been through any of such incidences of any cancelation of license or ban on its esteemed product.
