French Bus Driver Dies After Being Attacked By Passengers For Asking Them To Wear Masks

A bus driver from France died days after being attacked by passengers for asking them to wear protective masks during this coronavirus pandemic.

59-year-old Philippe Monguillot, the bus driver, died on Friday last week.

The news was confirmed by Marie, his daughter, after an interview with AFP.

The driver was declared brain dead following the attack.

During an interview with AFP, Marie said:

We decided to let him go. The doctors were in favor and we were as well.

Mongguillot was attacked on Sunday last week by 4 passengers in the city of Bayonne in the southwest region of France.

He reportedly asked 3 passengers to wear masks, which are mandatory on public transportation due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 4th man was asked to show his ticket.

Monguillot was a victim of extreme violence.

Marc Marc Mariée, the deputy public prosecutor of Bayonne, said:

There were insults and then shoving. The bus driver was pushed out of the bus. Two individuals then violently kicked and punched the upper part of his body, including his head.

2 of the 4 men have been charged with attempted murder for the attack.

The other 2 men were charged with non-assistance to a person in danger, and one man was also charged with attempting to hide a suspect.

The men that are charged with attempted murder are 22 and 23 years old.

Monguillot’s wife, Veronique, led a protest from the bus stop where the assault happened in his honor.

Thousands of people joined the protests.

During the march, Veronique said:

I will fight to the end, I have strength in me, I have almost no more tears. I’m angry and I’m going to go. I am not afraid, justice is with me. The justice will help me to avenge my husband.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, may his soul rest in peace.
