Ashura marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram, the annual commemoration of the death of Husayn, his family, and supporters that passed away during the Battle of Karbala, which happened on 10 Muharram in the year of 61 AH.

Mourning for the incident happened immediately after the battle. Elegies were written by poets to commemorate the Battle of Karbala during the Umayyad and Abbasid era.

The day of Ashura is a holiday in India, Pakistan, Bahrain, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq.

The root of the word Ashura has the meaning of tenth in the Semetic languages. This word literally translates to the tenth day.

According to some, the word is derived from the Hebrew ʿāsōr, with the Aramaic determinative ending.

Al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib was one of the grandsons of Prophet Muhammad and the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah.
