Usually, our motor vehicles registration numbers are issued by RTO of the respective states. These number plates should be placed rear and front vehicles as per Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) and are registered with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
But this isn’t the case with Military Vehicles, as they are registered under Ministry of Defence in New Delhi unlike us who get the registration with RTO in our respective states. The vehicles number plate usually display an upward pointing arrow which is known as Broad arrow which indicates it as government property or defence property to be particular.
The next two numbers usually indicate the year in which the vehicle was bought by the defence authorities. The next is the base code of the vehicle which is followed by the serial number which indicates the class of the vehicle. These vehicles usually have a green or black background number plate unlike us who must use a white background number plate.
The army classifies its vehicles into 5 categories. “A” category which is used to carry offensive weapons. “B” category are unarmoured vehicles which aren’t used to carry offensive weapons. “C” category vehicles are earth moving equipment used by Corps of Engineers and the Corps of EME and also include cranes. “D” vehicles are ground effect machines, again can be armoured or unarmoured. “E” category which is permanently mounted on vehicles.
The number plate of the chief of the staffs has 4 stars which indicate their rank and authority. The chief of the army has 4 stars on a red numbered plate while the chief of naval or air staff has a navy blue or sky blue coloured number plate with stars on it. Field marshalls have 5stars on the plates of the cars and usually can wear their uniform even after retirement until their death.
