In the Indian culture, brothers play a huge role in protecting their family and sisters. This is why one of the most celebrated days of the Indian culture is Bhai Dooj, a day where sisters do their part in well-wishing their brothers.

What Is Bhai Dooj?

On Bhai Dooj 2020, which is also known as Bhaiya Dooj, sisters pray for their brothers by telling God that they should have long and happy lives. This is done through a Tika ceremony. On this day, brothers give gifts to their sisters.

Bhaiya Dooj is also known as Bhau Beej, Bhatra Dwitiya, Bhai Dwitiya, and Bhathru Dwithiya in many parts of India. In the southern part of India, Bhai Dooj is also celebrated as the Yama Dwitiya.

Bhai Dooj is a festival that is celebrated by Hindus on the second Lunar day of Shukla Paksha, in the Vikram Samvat Hindu Calendar month of Kartika. This day is celebrated during Diwali or Tihar festival along with the famous Holi Festival, which is also known as the festival of colors.

Bhai Dooj is a celebration that is extremely similar to Raksha Bandhan, a day where sisters pray to God and ask for a long life for their brothers. On Bhai Dooj 2020, sisters will be getting gifts from their brothers, if they are elder or if they are capable of giving one to their sisters.

In the Kayastha community, there are 2 types of Bhai Doojs that are celebrated by this community. The more famous one comes on the 2nd day after Diwali, however, the lesser celebrated one is celebrated after Holi.

In Haryana, India, the ritual of Bhai Dooj is followed by a dry coconut with klewa that is tied along its with. It is used while doing aarti, prayer, of the brother.

How To Celebrate It?

This day is just like Raksha Bandhan, so celebrate this one by respecting your brother and pray for his wellness. This is also a good time to go in good terms with your brother in case you have been in a fight recently. Diwali is the start of new beginnings, so you want to treat Bhai Dooj as the same. Also, demand gifts from your brother, you deserve it!
