September 8 is the official International Literacy Day. It was declared as an international day by UNESCO on October 26, 1966, during the 14th UNESCO General Conference. International Literacy Day was celebrated for the first time in 1967. The aim of this day is to highlight the fact that education is important for everyone in this modern era.
Celebrations are held all over the world in order to celebrate this day. some of those celebrations include forums and informative sittings carried out to promote education and increase awareness about literacy.
It is reported that 775 million adults all over the world lack literacy skills. this means 1 in 5 adults are not literate. Not only that, but 2 thirds of those numbers are women. 60.7 million children all over the world are out of school and more people are attending irregularly or are officially under the section of college dropouts.
South Asia has the lowest regional literacy rate, it is then followed by the sub-Saharan Africa. Countries such as Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali have the lowest literacy rates in the world.
The International Literacy Day 2020 focuses on Literacy teaching and learning in the coronavirus crisis and beyond. The theme highlights literacy in a lifelong learning perspective. It also focuses on youth and adults.
